Our Mission


Our mission is to empower Black creatives with the skills, support and resources necessary to succeed within the film and entertainment industry. OBAC addresses systemic inequalities through: mentorship, networking, industry training and by providing safe space for experimentation.

OYA Black Arts Coalition is a Toronto-based home for film that welcomes all Black Canadian creatives. We believe in a community-based approach that is “for us, and by us.” We are here to support you, whether you get your start at 18 or at 80.

 
 

 

OUR FOUNDERS

  • Alison Duke

    A renowned Canadian writer-producer-director and visionary who’s recent film and television productions include two Canadian Screen Award winning documentaries;‘Being Black in Toronto’(21) and 'Mr. Jane and Finch' (20) for CBC; the 2-hr CityTV documentary special 'Cool Black North’ (19); and the short drama, ‘Promise Me’ (20) which had over 20+ festival screenings and 6 festival wins including two Golden Sheafs at the 2021 Yorkton Film Festival. She’s a recipient of Women’s in Film and Television-Toronto prestigious Crystal Mentorship Award for her innovative program design and support for emerging Black creators Along with Ngardy, she is a co-founder of OYA Media Group and is voted one of 2021 RBC Canadian women’s entrepreneur ‘One’s to Watch.’ She is a Director’s Guild of Canada member and is represented by the Gary Goddard Agency.

  • Ngardy Conteh George

    Hailing from Sierra Leone, Ngardy Conteh George is an award-winning filmmaker committed to working with systematically excluded communities, especially those that represent the rich cultures and complexities of the African Diaspora. Her films include TV hour ‘Mr. Jane and Finch’ (CBC, 2019) which won two 2020 Canadian Screen Awards including the Donald Brittan Award for Best Social/Political Documentary and award-winning Sundance Documentary Film Fund supported feature-length documentary ‘The Flying Stars’ (Best documentary – BronzeLens Film Festival, 2015). She is a member of the Director’s Guild of Canada, sits on the board of the Documentary Organization of Canada Ontario Chapter and is a Black Public Media & MIT Open Doc Labs visiting artist fellow. Ngardy is the co-founder of OYA Media Group, a Black women-led production company in Toronto.

  • Dr. Notisha Massaquoi

    Dr. Notisha Massaquoi is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Health and Society at the University of Toronto, Scarborough. Her early career supported the establishment of several organizations which served Black communities in Canada, including Africans in Partnership Against AIDS, Harambe Family Services, and Taibu Community Health Centre. She served for two decades as the Executive Director of Women's Health in Women's Hands Community Health Centre in Toronto – the only Community Health Centre in North America, which provides specialized primary healthcare for Black and racialized women. Notisha has consulted globally for the United Nations Social Development Council on racism and its impact on workforces and she is considered one of Canada's leading experts in developing equity responsive organizations.
